Unsafe Destinations for Solo Female Travelers

Countries with high crime rates and political conflict, such as wars and terrorism are, unsurprisingly, unsafe for travelers, much less solo female travelers. While most people won’t want to travel to active war zones and so I have not included them on this list, these are some countries that a lot of women report having a Bad Time and feeling unsafe in.

India

India is notorious for safety issues concerning solo female travelers. There are widespread issues of harassment, assault, and instances of violence against women. India has diverse cultural norms and attitudes towards women. Some areas may have traditional beliefs that may affect how women are perceived and treated.

Unfortunately, both verbal and physical harassment or assault happen in crowded streets, markets, public transportation, and tourist areas. A lot of women report feeling uncomfortable, unsafe, and vulnerable while in India. There are concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing these incidents, which contributes to feelings of insecurity among female travelers.

Egypt

Solo female travelers experience a lot of harassment, particularly in crowded and touristy areas of Egypt such as Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan. Instances of verbal harassment, catcalling, and in some cases, unwanted physical contact have been reported in busy public places, markets, and tourist sites, making some solo female travelers feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

Egypt has traditional gender norms and societal attitudes that differ from those in other countries. Female travelers may receive unwanted attention due to cultural differences and expectations regarding behavior and dress. To make matters worse, there are issues with the responsiveness of local authorities, leading to a perception of inadequate law enforcement. Unfortunately, venturing into isolated or less touristy areas, especially without a guide or in remote desert regions, might pose even greater safety risks and is not advised.

Morocco

A lot of women report experiencing varying levels of verbal harassment or unwanted attention, particularly in crowded places, markets, or less touristy areas. Catcalling and unwanted advances can be common in some regions, and can lead to assault.

Morocco has a conservative Islamic culture, and social norms regarding the role of women may differ from those in Western countries. Certain tourist areas, like bustling markets (souks), can be crowded, increasing the risk of petty crimes like pickpocketing or scams targeting tourists.

Venturing alone into remote or isolated areas, especially in rural regions, is not advised due to the lack of infrastructure or access to immediate assistance. Using unlicensed taxis or unreliable transportation services also poses safety risks.

South Africa

South Africa faces relatively high crime rates, including incidents of violent crime, theft, and assault. Certain areas, especially urban centers like Johannesburg and parts of Cape Town, have higher crime rates, making safety a concern. There have been reports of incidents such as muggings, carjackings, and assault, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance. So, walking around is dangerous. Public transportation might present safety challenges, and using reputable transportation services or pre-arranged transfers could be a safer option. So you cant walk or take public transit…

Brazil

Numerous articles online don’t shy away from highlighting the stark reality: Brazil a notably risky country. Not just for women but for men as well. The elevated crime rate prompts most embassies to strongly advise against solo nighttime strolls and recommend not resisting if faced with robbery attempts. Particularly in certain urban areas like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, there are higher crime rates, including incidents of theft, robbery, and violent crime. This can pose safety challenges, especially in crowded tourist spots or less-developed neighborhoods.

Travelers have to be aware of using unlicensed taxis or transportation services, and don’t display valuables or walk around with your phone in your hand.

While I have heard some positive things about traveling to Brazil, even from solo female travelers, this is not the best place to start with, especially if this is one of your first trips as a solo traveler.

The safest countries for solo female travelers span the globe and offer women a chance to see the world on their own terms. Using common sense in an already-safe country will help to ensure you have a great trip and get all the benefits of solo travel!
